Dimensional weight (DIM weight) is what carriers charge you for when your package is light but bulky — they bill you on cubic size, not scale weight. Use this dimensional weight calculator to enter your package length, width, and height, pick a carrier, and see whether you’ll be billed on actual weight or DIM weight in 2026.
How the dimensional weight calculator works
The DIM weight formula is the same across every major carrier: length × width × height ÷ a carrier-specific divisor. The divisor is a fixed number set by the carrier (most US domestic services use 139 cubic inches per pound; most international services use 166). You measure each side of the package in inches, multiply them together to get cubic inches, divide by the divisor, and round up to the nearest pound. The result is the dimensional weight. Your shipping label is priced on whichever is larger — the actual scale weight or the DIM weight.
Two quick examples make it concrete:
- Light, bulky box (DIM wins): a 14 × 14 × 14 inch box weighing 5 lb. Cubic inches = 2,744. Divide by 139 (UPS domestic) = 19.7, round up to 20 lb. You’re billed on 20 lb, not 5 lb.
- Small, heavy box (actual weight wins): a 6 × 6 × 6 inch box weighing 8 lb. Cubic inches = 216. Divide by 139 = 1.6, round up to 2 lb. Actual weight (8 lb) is higher, so you’re billed on 8 lb.
2026 carrier DIM divisors
Every carrier sets its own divisor, and many split domestic vs. international. The lower the divisor, the higher the billable weight (and the more aggressive the pricing). The table below lists the divisors in effect as of 2026 for the major US-facing carriers.

Actual weight vs. the DIM figure: which one bills?
Carriers don’t bill you on both — they bill on the larger of the two. The simplest way to remember it: actual weight is what your scale says; volumetric weight is what your tape measure says. If your package is denser than the divisor (more pounds than cubic-inches/divisor), you pay actual. If your package is less dense, you pay dimensional. The break-even point is the divisor itself: at 139 in³/lb, a 1-pound package “uses up” 139 cubic inches before DIM weight starts climbing.
- Dense shipments (books, hardware, canned goods, bottled liquids) almost always bill on actual weight.
- Bulky low-density shipments (apparel in oversized boxes, pillows, insulation, foam, lampshades, holiday décor) almost always bill on billable weight — sometimes 3–4× actual weight.
- Borderline shipments (small appliances, mid-size electronics in retail packaging) flip depending on how tight the inner packaging is.
How to lower your the DIM figure
Because DIM weight is multiplied by three dimensions, shaving even half an inch off one side compounds. A 12 × 12 × 12 inch box (1,728 in³, DIM = 13 lb at 139) becomes a 12 × 12 × 10 inch box (1,440 in³, DIM = 11 lb) — a 15% drop from a single inch on the height. Specific tactics:
- Right-size the outer box. Stock 3–4 box sizes that match your most-common SKUs, not one “we ship everything in this” box.
- Use poly mailers for soft, crushable goods (apparel, textiles, plush). Poly mailers are measured at their final flattened dimensions, which slashes cubic volume.
- Replace dunnage volume with weight. Air pillows take up space and add no real protection over short distances. Crinkle paper or molded pulp uses less cubic volume per inch of protection.
- Pre-flight the math before you commit to packaging. Run new SKUs through the calculator above before printing labels in volume — you’ll catch a DIM-heavy SKU before you’ve shipped 500 of them at a loss.
