Hold that against a real bike. Most packs are 36V or 48V and land between roughly 400 Wh and 1,000 Wh — a 48V 10Ah battery is 480 Wh, a 48V 20Ah is 960 Wh. Even a modest commuter pack is several times the 100 Wh excepted limit and well past the 300 Wh ground ceiling, so a loose ebike battery isn’t a “big consumer battery”; it’s fully regulated hazmat. How Do You Ship an E-Bike With Its Battery?

Here’s the good news the watt-hour tables hide. Once the battery is installed and the bike moves by ground, you’re not under the battery rules — you’re under the battery-powered vehicle rules. Section 173.220(c) says battery-powered vehicles, machinery, and equipment “are not subject to any other requirements of this subchapter except § 173.21 when transported by rail, highway or vessel.” No shipping papers, no Class 9 label, no UN-spec box. How Do You Pack an E-Bike Step by Step?

Start with the number that changes everything: weight. A typical e-bike runs 45 to 70-plus pounds bare, and cargo and fat-tire models climb from there. Boxed with padding you’re often at 60 to 90 pounds — enough that packing which works for a 22-pound road bike will fail under three times the mass.
